2015

The year we started teaching people to grade video properly

We built this platform because learning color grading online was frustrating. Most courses either skip the fundamentals or drown you in theory. We wanted something in between—practical lessons that actually show you how to work with footage, not just talk about it.

We started with a simple question

Why does learning color grading feel so disconnected from real work? Most courses teach you tools and theory but don't show you how colorists actually approach a project—the decisions, the workflow, the problem-solving.

Our founder spent years grading commercial work and noticed the same patterns: new colorists could use the software but struggled with the thinking behind good grades. They'd know where the buttons were but not when to push them.

That gap became our focus. We structured lessons around realistic scenarios—not perfect footage in controlled conditions, but the kind of material you'll actually encounter. Flat LOG footage that needs building up. Mixed lighting that needs balancing. Skin tones that need fixing.

What makes our approach different

We focus on the skills that matter when you're actually sitting in front of footage

Real-world footage

Every lesson uses actual project files—the challenging stuff you'll encounter in paid work, not perfect demo clips.

Decision-making focus

We explain why you'd choose one approach over another, not just what buttons to click in sequence.

Workflow structure

Learn how to organize your work efficiently so you're not constantly backtracking or starting over.

Problem diagnosis

Understand how to identify what's wrong with footage and which tools will fix it most effectively.

Progressive difficulty

Start with fundamental corrections and gradually build toward complex creative looks and stylized grades.

Industry context

Get practical advice on delivering work, handling client feedback, and maintaining consistency across projects.

Helena Virtanen

Lead Instructor & Course Designer

Helena grades commercials and branded content for studios across Europe. She's worked on everything from fashion campaigns to documentary series, which taught her that there's no single "right" way to approach color—just different tools for different situations.

She designs our curriculum to reflect how she actually works: starting with solid technical foundations, then building creative judgment through repetition and variation. Her teaching style focuses on helping students develop their own visual instincts rather than memorizing preset recipes.

Before launching Syrelthivaro, Helena noticed too many tutorials teaching isolated techniques without explaining when or why to use them. She built this platform to give students the context and practice they'd need to work confidently on real projects.

How we think about teaching color

Show the messy parts

Good color grading involves trial and error. We show you our process including the adjustments that didn't work, so you understand how to troubleshoot your own grades.

Explain the reasoning

It's not enough to follow steps. We explain why specific choices make sense for particular footage types and how to adapt techniques when conditions change.

Build on fundamentals

Advanced creative looks rely on solid technical foundations. We make sure you understand how to balance and correct footage before pushing toward stylized aesthetics.

Keep it practical

Every lesson connects directly to work you'll encounter in actual projects. Theory matters, but only when it helps you make better decisions with real footage.
